Erasmus mobility is based on Bilateral Agreements. These are formal contracts established between two Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) that hold an Erasmus University Charter. The agreements define the framework of cooperation under the Erasmus Programme. The following elements must be specified in a bilateral agreement:

  1. The duration of the agreement (academic year(s)),

  2. The names, Erasmus codes, and contact details of the host and partner institutions’ coordinators,

  3. Incoming student mobility (subject area code, number of students, and duration in months),

  4. Outgoing student mobility (subject area code, number of students, and duration in months),

  5. Incoming and outgoing teaching staff mobility,

  6. Incoming and outgoing staff training mobility.

For a bilateral agreement to be valid, it must be signed, dated, and officially sealed by the authorized representatives of both institutions.

Bilateral Agreements are signed between Higher Education Institutions in EU member states, candidate countries, and EEA countries (Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein).

Students of universities that have signed bilateral agreements are eligible to receive Erasmus financial support (grant) for a minimum of 3 months and a maximum of 12 months for study abroad within the Erasmus Programme.
